Description
On September 11th while on my way back from Amherst, I certainly did not expect to encounter a decorated Packer buggy being pulled by a horse! But that is exactly what I drove up behind on County B. After waiving to the occupants and giving them a "thumbs up", I rushed home, to grab my camera, and took off with our mopeds to find the unusual travelers.
And find them, we did. "Packer Bob" and Maren Retzlaff, along with their dog, Mortimer, had stopped along the road in a shady spot to let their horse, Rich, have a break. They answered our many questions, and we found that they had traveled from the Tomah area and were on their to Green Bay, as their sign on the buggy's back, "Lambeau or bust", indicated. Their annual 6-8 day trip requires an overnight stay at several places, and that included Scandinavia this year.
Rich is an ex-race horse, and this is his first road trip to Green Bay, as he is a replacement for the previous buggy puller. But he is not in a hurry to get to his next destination and is always ready to stop and meet new people. So if you happen to spot a gold and green horse drawn buggy on a backroad somewhere between Green Bay and Tomah, give a friendly wave and perhaps pull over for a brief visit with Packer Bob, Maren, Mortimer, and Rich.
The lovely artist between Packer Bob and Maren, is my lovely wife, Carolyn Rosenberger, who brought this spectacle to my attention, so I could get this great and unique photo opportunity to share on FAA.
